Football Vs. Dota

I used to get very excited thinking of the World Cup of Football. I’ve been working from a home office for over 12 years now, and I’ve always seen that as an amazing advantage for me, because while other people have to ask for permission to watch a match at work, I just need to turn on my TV to watch all of the matches if I want to.

In 2006 I had just returned to Guadalajara from a year abroad, living in France. As a matter of fact, I went to Germany in May, just weeks before the World Cup started right there. I got to see many of the preparations, before the majority of the football tourists arrived there. When I got home I was unemployed, so I took advantage of my inactivity to watch as much football as I wanted.

In 2010 I was living in Guanajuato, in a tiny two-bedroom apartment. I moved my working space to the livingroom, so I basically watched all of the matches of the South African World Cup. I even had fun combining the World Cup theme with some of my promotional efforts for the company  – like this one http://www.lenguajeglobal.com/boletin/2010/junio/

Then, in 2014, while I was living in Mexico city, I had a larger house and a larger office, so it was easier for me to bring a TV to my office, instead of me going to a different place. I enjoyed that Brazilian World Cup in a different level, because my daughter was born on June 22, so the matches broadcasted during the next few days were watched with the delicious pretext of “I am a mother who just gave birth, so I cannot do anything but relax and take care of myself”.

The World Cup is now a couple of weeks ago, and I am not excited at all. I don’t know what happened; this doesn’t do it for me anymore. Perhaps it is the fact that I accepted a couple of years ago that TV is dead, and I am just waiting for everyone else to realize it and decide to pull the plug and take TV out of its misery by declaring it shouldn’t be on life support anymore, and the main source of World Cup material from me used to come from traditional television.

Honest to god, I haven’t watched traditionally broadcasted TV in over three years. Netflix, Twitch, Kodi and YouTube are my best friends, and they do not broadcast World Cup football matches. Let’s see if any of the Mexican TV chains has already embraced their fate and has decided to broadcast the games online. That would help me not be a stranger to the process.

I feel much more excited about Dota tournaments and matches these days. Unfortunately, I only have a handful of real-life friends who like playing Dota, and – let’s face it – they are not that into following the whole process. I mean, sometimes we have Dota watching parties at our place or at their place during TI, but I do not have many friends who to share my opinions with. I am baffled by the fact that 4 out of the 5 players of VP have more DPC points that most of the teams in the circuit… I mean, Mineski has totaled 3,150 points, and Solo has 3,449 all by himself. It’s like comparing the economy of California versus the economy of most countries around the world.

But for me this is sort of a lonely hobby, because although I can share it with my husband sometimes when I make this kind of comment he asks something like, “what do you mean Solo by himself? How does the DPC system work?” and luckily for me I can tell him how this thing works and he gets it, but think of all of the football fans out there… I think they rarely have to explain the logic of their hobby to anybody else, because the number of people who watch and understand the sport is immense and therefore rules are widely known.

I cannot have this sort of heated discussion with another Dota fan abut “my team is better than yours” because none of my friends truly follow a team. They have picks depending on the tournament and on how well the team is doing during one particular period of time, but they are not familiar with this bitter-sweet feeling of “I am with Team Doughnut, win or lose” – and I am very familiar with this feeling. It’s cool for me that my team is doing well this year, but honestly I think VP is going to end up taking the whole enchilada home… and I am not an unconditional VP fan, they are only my second favorite team.

So, this year, I’ll have to see how the World Cup and the Super Major clash, depending on the date and the time when the matches are scheduled, but I am convinced I will favor Dota matches over any football match any day.

Plus, I have a couple of new projects I have been recently working on, and perhaps time will be very limited during these upcoming weeks, so let’s see how things work out for me. I’ll try to keep writing this blog, just for the sake of the discipline. I mean, the first week of April I was on fire, wasn’t I? Basically a post each day! And you might believe me, or not, I have a list of topics I want to write about, but I’d need 26-hour long days. I usually end up exhausted and – call me crazy – I usually prefer being able to sleep than writing for the blog.

Anyway, let’s see if I get to tell you about the amazing hot pot meal we had this weekend at home. We nailed it, truly! Not like the “nailed it” Pinterest pics that resemble nothing the original version. This was a badass hot pot meal we truly enjoyed.

Oh, on a different note, has anyone seen Deadpool 2 yet? Also, badass as fuck. I love Ryan Reynolds and the cynical style of Deadpool’s ‘lazy writers’. I honestly liked the first movie better, but this one made me laugh out loud at the theater. It was great, wasn’t it?
